Don’t you just love Christmas! It’s always a special time for me.

I also like to garden and occasionally I have a plant or two that I’ll adopt for indoor growing.

Last year we received a “Christmas Cactus” as a gift and it had a few nice flowers on it and was very pretty. After a couple weeks, the flowers went away and the plant stayed green with little crab-like claws on it. So I placed it near the kitchen window (indirect sun) and watered it once each week. It didn’t die, so I just kept taking minimal care of it.

So you can imagine my surprise when after Thanksgiving, I noticed little red spots showing up on the ends of almost all of the little crab claws. As they got bigger, I realized that these were actually going to be the flowers. And indeed, the flowers are coming at Christmastime this year. How cool is that?

As a background, you should know that my wife and I had a gardening contest this year, that neither one of us really won, as we just didn’t make the time to nurture our plants outside. My wife even threw away an orchid that lost its flower, that I brought back inside and it has two new leaves on it. (Anybody have any tips on how to make it flower again?)

I’ve been gardening since I was a little boy and my Dad made me help turn the soil using shovels each year! He also had me help plant the seeds and water the plants, so I know a good amount about gardening outside. I used to have a very large garden that was the envy of my neighbors. But alas, I just don’t have the time for that right now.Ā  šŸ™

But I wanted to share with you the beauty of the Christmas orchid in all its splendor – and also encourage you Dads out there that it’s not just for women, we Dads can grow plants indoors too!Ā  šŸ™‚

So what do you think?

And here is a picture of it today.

Here’s hoping your Christmas and your Holidays are as beautiful as this Christmas Cactus!
